ABOUT BUNYORO-KITARA

Bunyoro-Kitara is a traditional Bantu kingdom in Western Uganda, known for its rich history and cultural heritage.

At its peak from the 16th to 19th centuries, it was the largest and most powerful empires in East Africa, famous for its ironworking, salt industries, and fierce resistance to British colonialism.

It is ruled by the King (Omukama) and the current ruler is Solomon Gafabusa Iguru I, the 27th Omukama.

Overview

Bunyoro-Kitara lies in western region of Uganda, east of Mwitanzige, and covers an area of roughly 18,578 square kilometers. The kingdom’s administrative center and the Omukama’s palace are located in Hoima, widely known as Uganda’s “Oil City” due to recent regional petroleum discoveries. The kingdom is home to an estimated  2 million people, primarily the Banyoro, who speak the Bantu language of Runyoro-Rutooro.

History and Dynasties

The heritage of Bunyoro-Kitara spans over a millennium, beginning with the mythological Abatembuzi dynasty, who were eventually succeeded by the legendary Abachwezi. Following the collapse of the Kitara empire, the current Babiito dynasty was established.

By the 18th century, Bunyoro-Kitara dominated the Great Lakes region through advanced metallurgy, control of the Kibiro saltworks, and a highly centralized administration. The kingdom’s golden age is often associated with King Omukama Kabalega (or Kabareega), who fiercely resisted British colonial rule in the late 19th century.

Culture and Traditions

Today, the kingdom operates as a constitutionally recognized cultural institution in the Republic of Uganda. The Omukama (King) serves as the traditional and cultural leader. The current ruler is Solomon Gafabusa Iguru I, the 27th Omukama of the Babiito dynasty.
One of the most important cultural events is the annual Empango ceremony, which celebrates the coronation anniversary of the Omukama. This festival preserves the ancient lineage, rituals, and clan gatherings of the Banyoro.

Modern Era

While the region is known for its agrarian lifestyle—cultivating crops like bananas, cassava, and cotton—it has also become central to Uganda’s economic future. Extensive oil reserves have been discovered in the Bunyoro sub-region, bringing new development, infrastructure, and national attention to this historic territory.
