ABOUT BUNYORO-KITARA

Bunyoro-Kitara is a traditional Bantu Kingdom in Western Uganda, renowned for its rich history, cultural heritage, and enduring legacy.

At its peak from the 16th to 19th centuries, it was the largest and most powerful empires in East Africa, famous for its ironworking, salt industries, and fierce resistance to British colonialism.

The Kingdom is led by the Omukama (King), and the current ruler is His Majesty Dr. Solomon Gafabusa Kabumba Iguru I, the 27th Omukama of Bunyoro-Kitara.

Overview

Bunyoro-Kitara lies in western region of Uganda, east of Lake Albert (Mwitanzige), and covers an area of roughly 18,578 square kilometers. The kingdom’s administrative center and the Omukama’s palace are located in Hoima, widely known as Uganda’s “Oil City” due to recent regional petroleum discoveries.
The kingdom is home to an estimated  2 million people, primarily the Banyoro, who speak the Bantu language of Runyoro-Rutooro.

History and Dynasties

The heritage of Bunyoro-Kitara spans over a millennium, beginning with the mythological Abatembuzi dynasty, who were eventually succeeded by the legendary Abachwezi. Following the collapse of the Kitara empire, the current Babiito dynasty was established.

By the 18th century, Bunyoro-Kitara dominated the Great Lakes region through advanced metallurgy, control of the Kibiro saltworks, and a highly centralized administration. The kingdom’s golden age is often associated with King Omukama Kabalega (or Kabareega), who fiercely resisted British colonial rule in the late 19th century.

Culture and Traditions

Today, Bunyoro-Kitara is a constitutionally recognized cultural institution within the Republic of Uganda. The Omukama serves as the cultural and traditional leader of the Kingdom.
One of the most significant cultural events is the annual Empango Celebration, commemorating the coronation anniversary of the Omukama. This vibrant festival preserves the Kingdom’s ancient traditions, royal heritage, clan values, and cultural identity, while bringing together Banyoro and friends of Bunyoro from around the world.

Modern Era

While the region remains largely agricultural—producing crops such as bananas, cassava, and cotton—it has also become central to Uganda’s economic future. The discovery of significant oil reserves in the Bunyoro sub-region has attracted investment, accelerated infrastructure development, and brought renewed national and international attention to this historic Kingdom.
